Inactivation of Phage MS2 by Iron-Aided Titanium Dioxide Photocatalysis.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Near-UV photocatalytic disinfection was accomplished in aqueous titanium dioxide suspensions. A level of inactivation of phage MS2 of 90% increased to 99.9% after 2 muM ferrous sulfate was added. Hydroxyl radical oxidation, with Fenton reaction enhancement, is suspected to be primarily responsible for the viral degradation observed.

Photocatalytic inactivation of viruses using titanium dioxide nanoparticles and low-pressure UV light.
The carcinogenic potential of chlorine disinfection by-products and recent changes in water quality regulations have led to a greater emphasis on alternative disinfection mechanisms. In this study, the efficacy of bench-scale and pilot-scale titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) photocatalytic disinfection was explored using four bacteriophages (MS2, PRD1, phi-X174, and fr). The optimized bench-scale exper...
متن کاملInvestigation on the Removal of Malachite Green from Aqueous Solutions Using Photocatalysis of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles
Background & objectives: Malachite green color has been extensively used in aquaculture industry around the world. The drainage of colored wastewater containing malachite green to aquatic ecosystems has created very serious risks for human health and the environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal of green malachite from aqueous solutions using photocatalysis of titani...
متن کاملInactivation of Heterotrophic Bacteria in Well Water Using ZVI, TiO2 and ZnO Nanoparticles
Background & Aims of the Study: The heterotrophic bacteria are widely used as a water microbial pollution index for drinking water. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of metallic nanoparticles such as Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), Titanium dioxide (TiO2) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) on Heterotrophic Bacter...
متن کاملPhotoinactivation of virus on iron-oxide coated sand: enhancing inactivation in sunlit waters.
Adsorption onto iron oxides can enhance the removal of waterborne viruses in constructed wetlands and soils. If reversible adsorption is not coupled with inactivation, however, infective viruses may be released when changes in solution conditions cause desorption. The goals of this study were to investigate the release of infective bacteriophages MS2 and ΦX174 (two human viral indicators) after...
متن کاملDisinfection of Bacillus spp. spores in drinking water by TiO2 photocatalysis as a model for Bacillus anthracis
During the last decade the use of titanium dioxide has been the focus of water purification studies for photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds. Various studies have shown that TiO2 photocatalysis is a very efficient process for removal (by mineralization) of a large variety of hazardous chemicals. However, the potential use of this technology for water disinfection has been essentially...
